Explosion at ammonia factory in Ukraine

Explosion at ammonia plant in Ukraine. 5 people were killed and 20 injured as a result of an explosion at an ammonia factory in southeast Ukraine.

The incident took place yesterday at the ammonia plant within the Stirol chemical plants in Gorlivka City of the Donetsk Region. Factory officials announced that there were nearly 100 factory workers at the scene when the liquid ammonia pipes exploded as a result of compression. The city administration announced that the explosion will not adversely affect the health of those living in the vicinity.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych expressed his condolences to the relatives of those who lost their lives and said that he would personally follow the investigation of the accident. Prime Minister of Ukraine Nikolay Azarov announced that the families of those killed in the accident will be assisted by the cabinet as soon as possible.

Stirol plants, one of the country's largest nitrogen and chemical companies, was established in 1933. Ammonia, urea, ammonium nitrate, mineral acids and their salts, organic resins and various drugs are produced in Stirol, whose main raw material input is natural gas.
