“The energy to be obtained from the sewage and wastewater of İzmir can heat all the houses in Bayburt”

“The energy to be obtained from the sewage and wastewater of İzmir can heat all the houses in Bayburt” Yaşar University was entitled to receive 380 thousand TL of support from TÜBİTAK with its new project that will enable energy to be obtained from sewerage and waste water.
Yaşar University was entitled to receive 380 thousand TL support from TÜBİTAK with its new project that will enable to obtain energy from sewage and waste water. When the daily waste water potential of 720 thousand cubic meters of İzmir is evaluated within the scope of the project, heating and cooling energy will be obtained for 12 thousand houses. Yaşar University Head of Energy Systems Engineering Department Prof. Arif Hepbaşlı pointed out that the number of 12 thousand houses is equivalent to the total number of houses in Bayburt.

Yaşar University, which has been involved in renewable energy technologies projects worth 7 million 13 thousand Euros to be realized within the scope of the 500th Framework Program of the European Commission in the past months, has signed a new study to obtain energy from sewage and wastewater. Head of Energy Systems Engineering Department Prof. The project of the team headed by Arif Hepbaşlı was entitled to receive 380 thousand TL support within the scope of TÜBİTAK's Scientific and Technological Research Projects Support Program. Within the scope of the project, which was designed with a system that will work with solar energy, energy will be produced from waste water at low cost. The underground summer and winter temperatures of sewage and wastewater will be reduced or increased with a little energy, depending on the season, by means of heat pumps. By using solar energy panels, heat or coldness can be achieved and can be used for heating-cooling and hot water needs according to the season of the spaces.

According to the figures of the end of 2012, 71 percent of Turkey's current account deficit stems from energy imports. The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources plans to close the current account deficit by increasing the share of alternative energy such as thermal, hydroelectric, wind and solar energy in electricity supply from 2023% to over 1% by 30. According to the analysis of the Izmir Development Agency, the wind energy installed power of Izmir is currently equivalent to the consumption of 2 residences per month. In 500, it is foreseen that approximately 1 thousand 2023 houses will be equivalent to one month's consumption. İzmir also has a potential in biogas equivalent to the consumption of approximately 10 residences per month. İzmir, which is also very rich in terms of geothermal resources, can heat approximately 480 thousand residences, which is 1 times more than the current situation, where 2 thousand 500 residences can be heated if all its potential is used. Expressing that wastewater, which has been seen as a renewable heat source for heat pumps in Northern European countries such as Sweden, Norway and China in recent years, and whose application has been widespread for 1 years, is an important energy potential for İzmir. Dr. Arif Hepbaşlı summarized the study as follows:

-WASTEWATER POTENTIAL ENERGY SOURCE-

“According to TUIK figures, a person uses 217 liters of water per day, 84 percent of which, or 182 liters, goes to the sewers as waste water. However, even on days when the average air temperature is 7-8 degrees in the winter months, the waste water temperature is 14 degrees and the waste water temperature is measured as 40-28 degrees in the summer months when temperatures reach 29 degrees. In this case, wastewater represents an important potential energy for both heating and cooling of houses, greenhouses and workplaces. The basis of the project is a special piping system with sections for separate liquids and heat pumps to be installed in the sewage system. The system, which consumes less energy with the help of solar energy panels, provides more economical heating and cooling opportunities. Pipes through which drinking water or waste water pass abroad are specially selected. We will also work on the pipes to be used in the system. In the measurements made, it is seen that heating and cooling with this system provides more than 30 percent energy savings. This means that the heating and cooling needs of 720-10 thousand houses will be met if the entire daily waste water potential of 12 thousand cubic meters coming to the treatment system in Çiğli is utilized. Considering that the number of residences in Ardahan is 7 thousand 370, Bayburt 11 thousand 780 and Tunceli 14 thousand 350, the numbers reveal how important this system is in terms of energy efficiency.

-CALL TO MUNICIPALITIES-

"We cannot say that energy is the work of the states," said Arif Hepbaşlı, "There are things we need to do as individuals and as universities. First of all, we need to use energy more efficiently. Energy efficiency has become an important issue even more than energy production. Universities are also responsible for this. We carry out our work with this awareness. We are also calling on our municipalities. We are open to all kinds of cooperation for the daily use of the prototype that works with solar panels that we have prepared. First of all, we ask the district municipalities and the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality to show interest in this work.”

-THE PROJECT WILL BE CONDUCTED BY YAŞAR AND EGE UNIVERSITY'S SCIENCES PARTNERSHIP-
The presidency of the project, which was developed on the basis of the heat pump system, which is a machine that transfers the heat from a low temperature environment to a high temperature environment, by energizing from outside. Dr. While Arif Hepbaşlı, Asst. Assoc. Dr. Emrah Bıyık from Ege University, Assoc. Dr. Hüseyin Günerhan and Lecturer. See. Dr. Orhan Ekren is part of the team as a researcher. The project is scheduled to last 30 months and end on April 1, 2016.
