Thanks to Marmaray, 130 thousand tons of greenhouse gas will be reduced annually in Istanbul. Marmaray, which will carry 1 million people a day, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as reduce carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, non-methane hydrocarbon gases that cause air pollution.
In the written statement made by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, it was stated that Marmaray, which connects the two sides of Istanbul, will ease the traffic of Istanbul, as well as reduce the city's air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions.
It was stated that thanks to Marmaray, 130 thousand tons of greenhouse gas reduction will be achieved annually in Istanbul, and the following statements were included:
“The greenhouse gas emission released into the air from the Bosphorus, through which approximately 154 million 791 thousand 972 vehicles pass annually, is 44 million tons. With Marmaray, this rate is expected to decrease by 130 thousand 355 tons per year. Marmaray, which will transport 1 million people a day, will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also reduce the gases that cause air pollution. With Marmaray, 29 thousand tons of decrease is expected in the air of Istanbul, carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, non-methane hydrocarbon gases.'
Emphasizing that the World Health Organization's September 2013 report stated that air pollution is the most important factor that triggers lung cancer after smoking, it was stated that, according to the data of the Ministry, the sulfur dioxide value in Istanbul, which was 1994 in 145, decreased to 7 micrograms/cubic meter this year, resulting in a 20-fold improvement in air quality. .
