The engineers of the Moscow Scientific Research Company "Spektr" developed the portable radiological and chemical reconnaissance system. This system can be irreplaceable in the event of extraordinary emergencies at nuclear and chemical facilities, if terrorists use dirty bombs. Portable sensors that monitor and investigate the environmental situation can be placed at different points in the region where exploration studies are carried out. The obtained information is located on the inspection complex all-terrain vehicle. Tatyana Lebedeva, Deputy General Manager of Spektr Company, noted that this complex can be put into operation in a few minutes and said:
We can control the strength of gamma radiation beams and the concentration of chemicals. Radiological and chemical control sensors can be located at a distance of five kilometers in the city, and at a distance of 10 kilometers or more in the countryside, depending on geography. Data is transmitted non-stop for 8 hours'.
The operation of the portable sensors can be monitored from the fully airtight all-terrain vehicle. The specially designed ventilation system creates extreme pressure conditions inside the vehicle, making it impossible for toxic air to enter. In addition, the off-road vehicle is equipped with a special sensor that investigates the environmental situation. This sensor can detect the direction of the radiation beam source. Alexey Kudyakov, Director of the Radiological, Chemical and Biological Defense Department of the Ministry of Emergencies of Russia, explained that a powerful computer in the vehicle draws the radiological situation map in the online regime based on the data obtained, and said:
Data is automatically transferred to the map. When the system completes its work, it gives a report containing information about the pollution of the environment in the emergency area'.
Precise and accurate information provides the opportunity to take quick measures even in the most difficult situations. Failure to make the right decision quickly in the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in Japan had such disastrous consequences. The delayed arrival of the information to the analytical research center located hundreds of kilometers from the accident site required the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people from the poisoned area, and the elimination of the effects of the accident cost billions of dollars. Alexander Zaytsev, General Manager of Spektr Company, said:
If such tools were used in Fukushima, the objectives would be met more effectively. That is why in Russia it was decided to develop a complex that allows to control the radiation rate in the air'.
The first civilian all-terrain vehicle developed for radiological and chemical reconnaissance work has now been delivered to the Moscow Headquarters of the Ministry of Emergencies. Such high-tech gadgets were eagerly awaited here, because their foreign-made counterparts cost many times higher.
It is planned that 9 such reconnaissance vehicles will be produced and sent to all federal regions of Russia in the near future.
