'20 Thousand Occupational Safety Experts Needed'. Abdullah Bozkır, Chairman of the Birlik Occupational Safety Energy Workers' and Environmental Health Education Research Association (BIR-DER), said that according to the Social Security Institution (SGK) data, there is still a need for 20 thousand occupational safety experts in Turkey.
Bozkır, in Turkey, where there are a total of 1.4 million workplaces, according to the Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331 and the relevant regulations, as of today, the need for C class occupational safety specialists is 6 thousand, the need for B class occupational safety specialist is 6 thousand, and the need for A class occupational safety specialist is also met. He said it was 7 thousand. Pointing out that 25 percent of those who take courses from educational institutions are still working as civil servants in public institutions, Bozkır reminded that these people do not practice active occupational safety.
Stating that as of January 1, 2014, it has become obligatory to sign an occupational physician and occupational safety specialist agreement in workplaces with less than 50 employees in the dangerous and very dangerous class, Bozkır said, "This forces the government to take serious and radical decisions. Moreover, the provisions regarding the workplaces in question were previously postponed and it is inevitable that a second postponement will adversely affect the functionality and reliability of the law. Considering the obtained data and progress, the need for occupational physician and occupational safety specialist will increase significantly. We believe that it will significantly contribute to the fulfillment of the need for occupational safety expertise if it is possible for civil servants who have the occupational safety expertise certificate working in the public sector to do outside expertise.' said.
Bozkır stated that with the enactment of the Draft Law on Amendments to Certain Laws and the Decree on the Organization and Duties of the Ministry of Health and its Affiliates, on the agenda of the Parliament, workplace physicians working in the public sector will be able to practice workplace physicians for 30 hours per month. Bozkir said:
'If the draft becomes law; Physicians and family physicians who work in public institutions and organizations and do not have managerial duties may practice workplace medicine for a period not exceeding thirty hours per month, out of working hours in their institutions and organizations. Physicians may perform the duties of workplace physicians of less dangerous workplaces without the requirement of receiving occupational medicine training and having an occupational medicine certificate. This will contribute somewhat to the need for occupational physicians in the market. If the same situation is brought to the agenda among the occupational safety experts working in the public sector, a serious problem will be eliminated. Since the aim is to fight against work accidents and occupational diseases, it should be ensured that our colleagues, who work in the public sector and cannot actively work as occupational safety experts, should also be able to serve outside by considering the event from a multi-faceted perspective. As an association, we believe that an article should be added to the bag law, which has been discussed, for occupational safety professionals working in the public sector. We are of the opinion that there are common benefits of the public, not a part of the society.'
