Russian Physics Engineer and Environmental Specialist Victor Marchuk stated that the relationship between nuclear power plants and nature and the environment has been researched for 60 years and said, “As a result of the researches, it has not been seen that the nuclear power plant has had a negative effect on the ecosystem and environmental balance. In addition, during normal operation, the nuclear power plant does not pollute the water, soil and air in any way.
Physics Engineer and Environmental Specialist Victor Marchuk, who was in the city to attend the 'International Congress on Energy Security in the Eastern Mediterranean' held in Mersin, answered the questions of the UAV reporter about nuclear power plants. Explaining first whether nuclear power plants have a negative impact on nature, Marchuk said, “Very comprehensive programs have been made for a long time. It has been studied for about 60 years. As a result of these studies, it has not been seen that the nuclear power plant has any negative impact on the ecosystem and environmental balance.
“EVEN IF THERE IS AN ACCIDENTS AT AKKUYU NUCLEAR POWER PLANT, RADIATION WILL NOT GO OUT”
In response to the question 'Do nuclear power plants leak radiation to soil, air and water', Marchuk said, "These cases have happened. These situations arose only after the accident. During normal operation, the nuclear power plant does not pollute the water, soil and air in any way. The model adopted for Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant in Turkey has been so modernized and developed that in addition to normal operation, even if an accident occurs, neither water, air, nor soil will be polluted in any way. Certainly the radiation will not go out,” he replied.
Stating that radiation is not only found in nuclear power plants, Marchuk continued his words as follows: “There was always radiation before I learned about the existence of radiation. Radiation is actually a Latin word and it means illumination. There is a general term, a concept called solar radiation. Solar radiation is widely encountered in Turkey. Solar radiation is also largely found in x-rays. X-ray lights are also used in the medical world. The higher you begin to rise on the earth, the higher the amount of radiation, the higher its rate. At the same time, there are also natural radiation values originating from the ground. For example, the most important gas source causing radiation is raton. Raton is present in every part of our life, at every point. The irradiation caused by the nuclear power plant is many times lower than the natural radiation background and values.”
“NO CASE OF A NORMAL OPERATIONAL NUCLEAR POWER PLANT CAUSED CANCER”
To the question whether nuclear power plants cause cancer or not, Marchuk answered as follows: “There is almost 60 years of research and study on this. During the 60-year period, no cancer cases caused by the nuclear power plant were encountered during normal operation. On the other hand, chemical formations and chemical inventions caused by man during his own development period and evolution cause more cancer cases. At the same time, around 25 million chemicals are produced annually worldwide. Every year, 1,5 million additional chemicals and chemical products are added to this. Again, these chemical products cause cancer cases. The fruits and vegetables grown around the nuclear power plant can be eaten very easily.”
Talking about the water to be released into the sea, Marchuk said, “This water is clean. Because this water passes through the second circuit of the nuclear power plant. This water does not come into contact with the reactor zone, that is, the active zone in any way. Therefore, this water is so clean that I can even say that it is cleaner than natural fondant and natural values. We can understand its cleanliness from here. Fishing competitions are held regularly every year in the water basins where the water where the nuclear power plant is located is used. The fish that comes from there are consumed by everyone," he said.
