The terrible truth in TEMA's report…”The thermal power plant will set Turkey's wheat warehouse on fire” Wheat warehouse Konya is among the 200 most ecologically important regions of the world. Turkey's second largest lignite power plant is planned to be established in the region that hosts two National Parks and Lake Meke. TEMA Foundation explained the negative effects of the thermal power plant to be built in Konya's Karapınar District on the environment and human health with scientific data.
TEMA Report, ITU Chemistry Metallurgy Department Faculty Member Prof. Dr. İsmail Duman, Ege University Department of Public Health Lecturer Prof. Dr. Ali Osman Karababa, Adıyaman University Agricultural Engineering Department Lecturer and CROP-MAL Project Specialist Assoc. Dr. It was prepared in 6 months by the team of Erhan Akça, as well as Deniz Ataç, Chairman of the TEMA Foundation. It was stated that if the reserve in Karapınar, which is planned to be the largest lignite coal field after Afşin-Elbistan, is extracted, only ashes will occupy 30 football fields with a height of 10 meters in 5220 years, and even dust will adversely affect the surrounding provinces. It has been announced that 60 thousand people employed in agriculture will have to migrate after the withdrawal of underground water in Karaman, Ereğli, Karapınar Region, where the coal that is thought to be extracted is below the groundwater level.
“22 billion tons of soil will be released”
prof. Dr. İsmail Duman gave the following information: “A lignite reserve of 1,832 billion tons has been detected in the region. It predicts electricity generation of 30 MW over 5.870 years. For only 1 cubic meter of coal, 9,4 cubic meters of excavation must be excavated and the remaining 8,4 cubic meters of soil must be transferred to another location. The amount of soil excavation and excavation required for the entire lignite reserve of 1,832 billion tons is approximately 11,5 billion cubic meters, that is, 22 billion tons of soil.
“Just one thousandth means 700 thousand tons of dust per year”
“Even one-thousandth of the excavation is pollinated and rises into the air, equivalent to 30 million tons of dust flying in 22 years, 700 thousand tons of dust per year. The coal to be mined is at an average depth of 138 meters. The groundwater level is at most 20 meters. By accelerating the decrease in groundwater, the number and size of the sinkholes will increase.”
“There will be 1.85 billion tons of carbon emissions”
“60 thousand people employed in agriculture will have to migrate in the region. The cooling water requirement of the thermal power plant is 88 thousand liters. There is no such water source in Konya. The ash excavation, which will fill the 5220 football field at a height of 10 meters, will also affect the surrounding provinces with the wind.
Extracting the Karapınar reserve and burning it in the thermal power plant will release 2010 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which is 4,4 times the total greenhouse gas emissions of Turkey in 1.85.”
“Public health is at risk”
Ege University Public Health Department Lecturer Prof. Dr. Ali Osman Karababa, on the other hand, said, “The result of EU studies is more than 18.200 premature birth-related deaths, around 8.500 cases of chronic bronchitis and over 4 million lost working days every year. The health cost of coal is 42,8 billion Euros per year. The mercury, arsenic and heavy metal rates of the coal in Karapınar are unknown.”
