Impressive Wheat Yield Study from the Faculty of Chemistry

Erciyes University Faculty of Science, Department of Chemistry Lecturer Prof. Dr. Abdullah Shepherd increased the yield of old wheat seeds he found after searching for about 3,5 years, thanks to the fertilizer and insect repellent he developed. In a statement to the AA correspondent, Çoban reminded that besides his job at the university, he was engaged in farming in his hometown of Sivas, Karacalar village.

Defending that most of the wheat seeds used today are genetically modified, Çoban said:
“You can use this seed for a maximum of 3 years. Because the yield and quality are declining. There is no such problem with wheat seeds used in Anatolia for thousands of years. However, we are about to lose these seeds as well. There are wheat varieties such as 'zeron', 'şahman', 'red' and 'white' in our region, which have been known for thousands of years, but these varieties are also not easily found because they are on the verge of extinction.”
Shepherd, who stated that he was looking for these wheat seeds, said that he found the shaman in Karacaören village of Kırşehir and zeronu in a mountain village in Gemerek district of Sivas.

– Manure from coal, insect repellent from garlic
Shepherd said that he planted the seeds he found in his village last year and obtained 53 tons of wheat from 20 decares of land.

Emphasizing that he planted some of the seeds on 700 decares of land this year and distributed some to the farmers in the village, Çoban said that he obtained 25-30 percent more yield from wheat than the producers in the region.
Explaining that she has done a separate study for the increase in yield in wheat, Çoban said, “The organic fertilizer I produced from coal years ago also helped in the increase in yield. I also used an insect repellent that I developed from garlic extract. I planted the seeds after washing and drying them with liquid fertilizer and garlic pesticide before planting them. I also used this fertilizer for beets. There was an increase in efficiency of about 30 percent in it," he said.
Noting that he is still looking for red and white wheat seeds, the shepherd added that he can exchange the seeds he has with the farmers who have these seeds.
