Condolences to our Nation

Bless our nation. A fire broke out from a private company's coal mine in Manisa's Soma district at 15.30 yesterday due to a transformer explosion.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yıldız, in his last statement to the press in Soma, announced that 284 workers died from carbon monoxide poisoning and 80 workers were injured.

Yıldız said, “3 days of national mourning has been declared. The Friday sermon will also be about the mining accident. Our Prime Minister has a will and recommendation in this regard. This hardship and pain exceeded our expectations. We are heading towards an accident that resulted in our highest loss of workers ever.”

Noting that the number of people who lost their lives increased to 285, Yıldız said that there was no firewood explosion in the mine, and that the workers lost their lives due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Yıldız said that an administrative and judicial investigation will be initiated.

Upon being asked about the number of workers inside, Yıldız said, "I don't want to mislead the public by saying a high number."
