Qualcomm's mid-cycle "plus" chip refresh—Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1—has been announced. As usual, Qualcomm is promising some modest improvements over the current 8th Gen 1 chip.
The company said the chip will provide "200 percent faster CPU performance," thanks to 3,2 MHz peak CPU support (now up to 10 GHz) and a 10 percent faster GPU. According to the information given, these values are shocking. Its claims are “30 percent increased power efficiency for the CPU and GPU.
For the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus, Qualcomm is moving the chip from Samsung Foundry to TSMC, and that's apparently where the power improvements come in.
This is a serious critique of Samsung's 4nm process versus TSMC's 4nm process, but in line with earlier issue reports on Samsung Foundry.
Replacing the Samsung Foundry as part of a mid-cycle upgrade is unusual, and it looks like Qualcomm went into a bit of a recovery with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
The chip didn't fare very well in the real world, as the CPU regularly scores lower benchmarks than 2021's flagship Snapdragon 888.
Qualcomm doesn't initially do that much for phones every year. It regularly lags years behind Apple's SoC team.
Usually, the only reliable upgrade Qualcomm can offer comes across as a measurable percentage of benchmark improvements.
The GPU was developed for 2022, but it was a disappointment to see CPU capacity drop after Qualcomm claimed it would be 20% faster.
